GMB correspondent challenges Justice Secretary live on TV amid government's 22-day interview boycott

Good Morning Britain’s Jonathan Swain challenged Justice Secretary Robert Buckland live on TV in response to the government apparently ghosting the programme.

It has been 22 days since a minister appeared on the ITV breakfast show, so the senior news correspondent attempted to go to them instead.

Host Susanna Reid certainly thought that Jonathan was the man for the job - he was the reporter who ambushed Prime Minister Boris Johnson, before his infamous escape into a fridge.

"If anyone can negotiate an interview, it's Jonathan Swain," she said.

In the live footage, Jonathan could be seen speaking to Mr Buckland from a distance as he was conducting an interview with another channel.

Once the interview was over he then endeavored to engage him in a conversation about appearing on GMB to face Piers Morgan and Susanna, who were watching intently from the studio.

The cabinet minister could be heard saying he would be free in "about an hour and a half" before he scarpered from the scene.

Piers made a sarcastic comment saying: “I look forward to talking to you later and ask some questions.”

Jonathan said he would give them an hour and 40 minutes to come back, which would take them to the end of the programme at 9am, when Lorraine Kelly takes over.

The news journalist told the panel: “He did say he liked the presenters and he watched the show and he would like to come on the show.

“But he’s walking off as we speak. Who knows, fingers crossed.”

Perhaps as expected, the interview did not transpire in today’s episode.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
