GMB chaos as Susanna Reid struggles to regain control after guest starts singing over co-star

Good Morning Britain descended into chaos as ITV guests Andrew Pierce and Kevin Maguire debated the current economic turmoil following the Tory government’s mini-budget.

The journalists appeared on the programme remotely from the Labour party conference and were quickly at odds as they discussed the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) severe criticism of the government's fiscal plan.

The debate soon spiralled into a stinging attack which saw the Daily Mirror’s Maguire break out into a rendition of the Monty Python track Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.

Prior to the clash, the associate editor reflected on the IMF reaction to the tax cut plans, which have sent the GBP’s value spiralling.

He said: “The speculators and casino economy are saying, ‘You bet wrong here, you’ve got it absolutely wrong’.

“Your living standards are suffering and at the same time they’re giving a shedload of money to the richest in the country. It’s a moment in British politics.

“Truss and the Tories are down on the floor. They’ve got it absolutely wrong and most Tory MPs know that.”

Andrew Pierce then replied, saying: “The problem here though is that the polls show people still don’t know what Labour stands for.

Maguire then started singing the Eric Idle hit while sitting next to Pierce, with him initially replying: “Hang on, Kevin.”

But Pierce pressed on with his criticism of the Labour leader, while Maguire continued to sing, with the studio hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls looking on in slight disbelief.

Maguire stopped singing to reply to Pierce: “ Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck could come up with a better alternative to your government. You’ve created this mess.”

The pair then quickly began to talk over one another, leaving the Good Morning Britain hosts in the studio struggling to regain control of the programme.

Susanna was heard repeatedly saying Maguire’s name as she tried to butt in, as Ed then said: “Order, order, order.”

The programme then abruptly cut the journalist’s connection as they continued bickering and the programme returned to the studio, with Susanna saying: “Thanks both very much.”

This comes after Good Morning Britain similarly turned heated over the political turmoil on Tuesday morning, as Alastair Campbell and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi appeared on the ITV programme.

The former Labour spin doctor and Tory peer sat down with hosts Susanna and Ed to discuss Channel 4 reality show Make Me Prime Minister.

However, given their guests’ political pedigree, as Susanna asked the Baroness for her verdict on Keir Starmer.

Campbell then cut in, saying: “Part of the reason –” before Susanna herself interjected telling him to “Hang on.”

She continued: “No, you just interrupted someone who hadn’t finished and then said, ‘Let me finish’. Why don’t we allow Baroness Warsi to finish?”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
