Gmail, Google and YouTube websites stopped working for many users around the world.

In a rare outage, the problem was reported on Monday morning just before 12 noonon the first day that many pupils were using the system as high school children start their first day of online learning.

There were also issues reported in other parts of the world, with India reporting problems with Gmail and YouTube.

According to DownDetector, the issues started at around 11:56am, and affected users worldwide. Google is yet to comment on the issues.

Many people trying to access Google got an error 502 message saying: "The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request."

On DownDetector, users described the problems they were having, with one saying: "Can't log in to Gmail or any admin services."

The Google search engine continued working, but its other services did not, including crucial tools relied on by businesses around the world including Google Docs and Sheets. Google Drive, Maps, the Android Play Store were also down.

Users also took to Twitter, with one saying: "Gmail, Google Drive and YouTube all being down at once is really not supposed to happen. Something has gone very wrong at Google towers."
