GM Kevin Colbert intends to make Bud Dupree a Steeler for life

General manager Kevin Colbert made it clear that linebacker Bud Dupree continues to be a priority even after the franchise tag was placed on him.

In a video interview with Steelers team reporter Missi Matthews, Colbert explained that the team is working on a longterm deal with Dupree.

“Bud Dupree has always been a priority,” said Colbert. “Our message has been consistently, ‘Hey Bud, if we use the franchise tag, our goal is to still sign you and get you locked up as a Steeler for the rest of your career,’ and that’s what we’ll continue to try to do.”

A 2015 first-round draft selection, Dupree didn’t much of a splash until the final year of his rookie contract. Last season, the LB had a career-high 11.5 sacks, 68 tackles (16 for loss), and 17 quarterback hits. He tacked on three passes defensed, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries — also career highs.

During his first four seasons, he had a combined 132 tackles (30 for loss), 20 sacks, and one interception for a touchdown.

NFL players tend to light it up when they’re playing for a contract. Will Dupree perform as he did in 2019 or will he take a step back?
