GM Eric DeCosta: Ravens looking to draft — not free agency — for WR help

Whoever finally manages to bring a star wide receiver to the Baltimore Ravens will probably forever go down in Baltimore sports lore as a hero.

After many whiffs on the position in the draft, a revolving door of free agent receivers, and just an overall neglect for the wide receivers room, fans are simply starving for a stud pass catcher.

With the Ravens once again facing a dearth of talent at wide receiver — Wille Snead, Chris Moore, Jordan Lasley and Jaleel Scott are the only Baltimore receivers under contract for 2019 — acquiring receiving talent is one of the more pressing demands for new Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta.

Speaking at the annual league owners meetings on Monday, DeCosta indicated that he intended to look to the draft — and not free agency — for additions at wide receiver.

To DeCosta’s point, this year’s free agent class at receiver was unusually weak. Talent was hard to come by and came at a premium as a result of scarcity. Case in point — wide receiver Tyrell Williams, who signed a 4-year, $44.3M deal with the Oakland Raiders. That’s way too rich for Baltimore’s blood.

Instead, DeCosta and the Ravens will turn their attention towards the draft, where there is a promising crop of young receivers to be found. Receiving prospects like N’Keal Harry and Kelvin Harmon are already being mocked to Baltimore, and these comments from DeCosta make it seem all the more likely that the team will pounce on a pass catcher early on.
