Gloucestershire truffle company expands as demand soars

A global supplier of truffle goods is expanding its premises in Gloucestershire after a rise in demand for its products.

TruffleHunter, in South Cerney, has invested in new spaces including a larger production area and a new snack manufacturing line.

The firm, which won a Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2021, has seen overseas sales grow more than eight-fold in six years and the company’s products are now used in more than 30 countries.

Since 2017, TruffleHunter has reported 200% growth and is predicting a turnover of more than £8m this year, it said.

According to the business, its range of truffle snacks, including Truffle Crisps, Truffle Popcorn and Truffle Seaweed Tempura, have seen a "huge spike" in international markets such as the US, Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong and China.

Nigel Whitehouse, chief executive of TruffleHunter, said part of the company's investment had gone into creating a production line for TruffleHunter's new range of compostable truffle crisp bags.

"There are very few companies offering this kind of packaging, as crisp packets are notoriously difficult to recycle," he said.

"As well as this, our tinned snacking range is now fully recyclable, and fits perfectly alongside Gloucestershire County Council’s bid to encourage metal recycling.

"As consumers continue to become more environmentally aware, we are keen to play our part in ensuring that we become part of the solution, not the problem.”

TruffleHunter was established more than a decade ago and its range is produced at its Cotswold base, using partners to offer truffle dairy products such as butter and cheese.

The company sells online and also through Amazon and other international partners. The business also supplies a number of Michelin-star chefs and trade outlets across the world.
