Gloucester Road gets its first independent bookshop in years

An independent bookshop will open on Gloucester Road for the first time in more than a decade.

The famous shopping street is home to the longest stretch of independent stores in the country, but for years its only bookshop has been charity retailer Books for Amnesty.

That is set to change with the launch of Gloucester Road Books, next to Pawson's greengrocer in the Bishopston area of the street.

The opening date is not known, but workers have been spotted preparing the shopfront this week. When our photographer visited today, the shutter was down and painted with some floral graffiti in time for spring.

The street's last independent bookshop, the Book Cupboard, closed in 2008 at the unit now home to the Compass Project.

The city's literary community has welcomed the news on social media.

Bristol-based author Emily Koch tweeted: "A BOOK SHOP ON GLOUCESTER ROAD, FINALLY. A couple of years ago we had only big bookshops, which are also great - but Bristol deserves more. To have the joy of Storysmith Books, Max Minerva's and now this, makes my bookish heart so happy."

Independent picture book publisher Book Island added: "Fantastic news for all the locals who've said to me in the past five years: 'The Gloucester Road really needs an indie bookshop.'

"With Gloucester Road Books within 500m from Book Island and Playful Toyshop down the road, we'll be very spoilt. Can't wait!"

The Max Minerva’s Marvellous Books shop, in Westbury Park, tweeted: "Welcome to the city! Good to see your bookish self."

Children's editor at The Bookseller Charlotte Eyre posted: "Bristol is getting so many amazing bookshops. I am very jealous. Please someone set one up in Croydon. I will be your biggest supporter."
