Gloucester Brewery appoints first artist in residence as it hits £500k crowdfunding target

Gloucester Brewery has appointed its first artist in residence as part of plans to support creatives from across the city.

Former local tradesman Russell Haines will display his work at a small gallery in the brewery's new waterside bar Warehouse 4 at Gloucester Docks.

Mr Haines, who paints contemporary, expressionist-style pieces, took up art as a means of therapy after suffering a stroke.

The appointment and exhibition is the first of a rolling programme that will see a number of artists showcased at Warehouse 4 over the next 12 months.

The news comes as Gloucester Brewery reached a crowdfunding target of £500,000, just over a month after launching a campaign for investment.

The company raised funds from more than 750 investors and will use the cash to further develop its new waterside venue in front of the Fox Kiln Distillery, and as part of plans for a portfolio of bars across the region.

Jared Brown, founder and managing director of Gloucester Brewery, said: "Today we have reached our £500,000 target. We are absolutely over the moon. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who has got involved.

He added: "We want to establish ourselves as one of the leading independent eco-friendly breweries and distilleries in the UK by producing high-quality, progressive beers and spirits."

Since opening Warehouse 4 in September, Gloucester Brewery said it had been able to increase the number of cultural events it holds including its comedy night Brew Ha Ha.

The brewery is hosting a meet-the-artist event with Mr Haines at the taproom on Wednesday, December 15, between 6.30pm and 8,30pm.
