Glory night for SNP as Alyn Smith claims comfortable victory in Stirling

Alyn Smith was in celebratory mood early this morning (Friday) after clinching the Stirling seat with a majority of more than 9000.

At the count held in the Albert Halls, Stirling, Nationalist supporters cheered and waved flags when, around 3.15am, Returning Officer Carol Beattie declared Mr Smith as the area’s new MP.

After being congratulated by his parents Edward and Jane, the new MP for Stirling said he and his supporters had kept the campaign “positive and serious and focussed on conversations”.

In Ochil and South Perthshire, it ended in victory for John Nicolson, the SNP candidate who at a hustings during the campaign mixed up the name of the constituency he was fighting. He received 26,882 votes, defeating Tory incumbent Luke Graham with a 4508 majority.

  • A special General Election edition of the Stirling Observer will be in shops tomorrow (Saturday) with full coverage, reaction and photos.
