Peru has surpassed Italy’s number of coronavirus cases, making Latin America the current epicentre of the global outbreak.
The country’s number of confirmed infections stands at 240,908, the second-highest after Brazil’s tally of almost a million.

The outbreak is thought to have started in a large food market.
