Global round-up: Australia says quarantine system is 'under pressure'

Australia said the number of people allowed to return to the country might have to be limited as the quarantine system is “under pressure”.

Since March, more than 350,000 Australians have returned home, with most undergoing quarantine in hotels in Sydney and Melbourne, which has gone back into lockdown.

Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has again downplayed the pandemic after revealing he has tested positive for Covid-19.

He likened the virus to a rain that will fall on most people, adding: “Life goes on.”

A patient in New Zealand is facing charges for escaping from quarantine and going to a supermarket.

The 32-year-old man escaped through a fence at an Auckland hotel and was gone for just over an hour. He later tested positive for the virus.

France’s new prime minister Jean Castex said further lockdowns in the event of a new outbreak would be targeted, not nationwide.
