Global Recycling Day: When is it and what is the theme for 2023?

The Earth produces billions of tonnes of natural resources each year, but eventually, in the no- too-distant future, those resources will run out. Global Recycling Day is aiming to combat this.

The Global Recycling Foundation wants the public to think again about what we throw away - seeing not waste, but opportunity.

The circular economy places a strong emphasis on recycling, which helps to safeguard our natural resources. Recycling prevents more than 700 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, and it is anticipated that this number will reach one billion tonnes by the year 2030. Recycling is, without doubt, a front-line strategy in the battle for the survival of both people and the Earth.

Newspapers, plastic water bottles, soda cans, cereal boxes, and milk cartons are some common everyday recyclable items. If we put effort into recycling items that we usually throw away, we can impact the Earth and our lives in a more profound way.

When is Global Recycling Day 2023?

Global Recycling Day is celebrated on March 18 every year.

The foundation has brought together millions of individuals and groups to raise recycling awareness since it was established as a UN-recognised day in 2018.

What is the theme for Global Recycling Day 2023?

The Global Recycling Foundation is running the Recycling Heroes 2023 award, recognising everyone from individuals to business leaders, sole proprietors to multinational businesses, and towns and cities that have actively continued to recycle during one of the most challenging economic times in many years.

The top entries will each earn US $1,000 (£834), and their concepts will be shared internationally via social-media platforms associated with Global Recycling Day.

This year, the foundation is seeking inventiveness when it comes to recycling waste. Thus, they will be giving away an additional 10 prizes totalling US$250 (£208) to those who can come up with the most creative ways to reuse commonplace products. If waste is recycled into usable products like furniture, clothing, tableware, or building materials, it may be a powerful image, work of art, or concept for a new commercial use.

They will be looking for a submission that is simple to adapt for all nations and will it have an impact on struggling economies.

Entry deadlines for both competitions is March 3, 2023, and winners will be notified on March 18, on Global Recycling Day.

What other important climate days are there in the calendar?

On Saturday, March 25, people are being urged to show their support for environmental issues by switching the lights off for Earth Hour 2023. It is also London Climate Action Week from June 24 to July 2 this year, where an array of events are scheduled. More can be found here.
