Global hotelier returns to Scotland to launch boutique venues

A Scottish hotelier who has been involved in developing luxury hotels across the world is launching a new business to invest in boutique properties in Scotland.

Gordon Campbell Gray has launched The Wee Hotel Company and The Pierhouse Hotel and Seafood Restaurant at Port Appin in Argyll has been announced as its first purchase.

The hotel, on the shores of Loch Linnhe, has views to the islands of Lismore and Mull.

“I’ve been lucky enough to live and work in many countries across the world but I really feel that few can rival the sheer magnificence of Scotland when it comes to scenery, food and drink, and I’m now ready to come home,” said Campbell Gray.

“I live in Argyll and realised one day that I always had that going back to school feeling when I was leaving to head off on more travels, so I finally said to myself – then why am I leaving?”

He was named Hotelier of the Year by Hotel & Caterer in 2002, received the Leading Legend award by Leading Hotels of the World at their annual convention in Tokyo in 2010 and received the Outstanding Contribution to the Hotel Industry award at the Hotel Cateys in London the following year.

Further acquisitions by The Wee Hotel Company are expected over the coming weeks.

Gray, who grew up in Glasgow, began his career as a purchasing manager at the InterContinental hotel in London. He went on to found London-based Campbell Gray Hotels which operates luxury hotels in locations including Malta and on Lake Zurich. He stepped down as a director of the business late last year and now fills a more ambassadorial role.

During his 20s, Gordon also spent several years running Save The Children projects in Bangladesh, Morocco and Nicaragua. He is vice president of the charity and is involved with a number of other good causes.
