Global Climate Strike: Hundreds turn out in Liverpool to support school walkouts

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside St George's Hall this afternoon in support of schoolchildren who are striking against climate change.

Pupils from across Merseyside have taken the day off school in the latest series of protests - which were started a year ago by Swedish teenager, Greta Thunberg.

Councillors, volunteers and unions joined the schoolchildren outside the iconic Liverpool building to fight against global warming.

The young strikers are calling for an end to the burning of fossil fuels and want the government to declare a "climate emergency".

One teenager who made a speech on the steps of St George's hall also claims climate change is a "war of rich nations against poor nations."

She said: "It is also a war of rich nations against poor nations.

"Rich imperialist countries like Britain are driving environmental destruction and global warming as they exploit countries around the world.

"They plunder their natural resources, their oil, their minerals, their land.

"They bribe a small layer in these poorer countries to hand over resources at rock bottom prices.

"This is a new form of colonialism."

Ian Campbell who was there to show his support told the ECHO: "I am here today to show my support to the student strikers.

"There are strikes all round the world today - people are still concerned about climate change.

Volunteers from Merseyside's Greenpeace were also protesting this afternoon and holding up signs, which read 'There is no planet B ' and 'Denial is not a policy'.

One volunteer said: "We're in support of the young people striking today as it is a climate emergency.

"We need to do something quickly as in the next ten years these young people will have nothing left."

This morning Liverpool's Lush store closed as staff joined the climate protest.

Signs were placed in the shop's window front informing customers its doors would remain closed until 1pm.

The sign read: "Sorry we are closed.

"Lush is responding to the call from school strike for climate asking adults to suspend business as usual whilst they rally today to demand action on climate change."

Even Lush's press office ,when contacted by the  ECHO , had set an automated email response informing journalists they were unavailable 'due to an emergency'.
