A collection of about 1,000 dazzling golden items are on display at the Dai Ogon-ten, or Great Gold Exhibition, being held at the Hiroshima branch of Mitsukoshi department store in Naka Ward, Hiroshima, to the delight of visitors.
The popular annual exhibition, scheduled to run through Wednesday, features myriad creations made from the precious metal, such as dishware, items used in Buddhist rituals and even objects featuring popular characters.
The collection is estimated to be worth over a billion yen.
The crown jewels of the exhibition are a 1.8-meter-tall and 1.5-meter-wide giant daruma doll imbued with the spirit of not giving up in the face of the novel coronavirus crisis and a 1.2-meter-tall and 1.5-meter-wide sculpture of Daikokuten, a deity associated with wealth, riding an ox. 2021 is the Year of the Ox in the Chinese zodiac. Both are masterpieces said to be valued at 22 million yen apiece.
"Gazing at such a brilliant golden color brightens my spirit," said a smiling visitor who came from Hiroshima's Asaminami Ward with his family.
