Glider pilot killed in crash during national championships

A glider pilot has died in a crash on Queensland's southern border.

The Gliding Federation of Australia (GFA) confirmed a Victorian man aged in his mid-70s was flying a single-seat Jonker JS-1 as part of the 37th National Gliding Championship held near Goondiwindi.

It is believed a pilot in another plane saw the aircraft begin to spiral shortly after being released from its tow before it hit the ground near the Cunningham Highway around 1:30pm.

The cause of the crash is not known and New South Wales Police are investigating.

The GFA will assist police with the investigation into the cause of the crash.

GFA executive manager of operations Chris Thorpe said he knew the pilot personally and he was "very experienced".

"I've known him for 30 years and he was a very, very experienced glider pilot," he said.

"We're such a close-knit community and obviously when something serious like this happens it hits us hard.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends."

National Gliding Championship director Bob Flood expressed his condolences.

"All the competing pilots and officials extend their sympathy to the family of the pilot," he said.

Last month, two men died in a glider crash near Dalby on the Darling Downs, west of Brisbane.
