BUFFALO, N.Y. � As the losses mounted, Gleyber Torres' non-contribution became prominent among the Yankees' missing elements.

A speech by GM Brian Cashman Tuesday and lineup alterations by manager Aaron Boone couldn't give them what Garcia provided Wednesday, yielding just two runs with no walks and six strikeouts in his third big-league start.
But it was long past due for Torres to cash in.
Entering the game with just five extra-base hits and six RBI over his first 105 plate appearances this season, Torres homered, doubled and had three RBI in his first three at-bats.
With the Yanks having lost 15 of their last 20 games entering Wednesday, clinging to the eighth and final AL postseason spot, DJ LeMahieu played a complete game that included a home run.
And with the outcome still in doubt on Roberto Clemente Day, catcher Gary Sanchez gunned down a runner at second to end the eighth on a would-be wild pitch, keeping it a 5-2 game.
Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman closed it out, as the Yankees (22-21) ended their rough road trip with a desperately needed win.
Sunk to No. 8 in the lineup, Sanchez (0-for-3, walk) continued digging a tunnel to nowhere.
Hitless in his last 14 at-bats, Sanchez is in a 2-for-25 freefall with 12 strikeouts.
"If we're going to be at our best, we need to get Gary in a place where he can get rolling offensively," said Boone before the game.
Boone had benched Sanchez two games, Sunday at Baltimore and Monday against Toronto.
