Glenvale hoping for repeat performance after beating league leaders Finnart

Glenvale upset the apple cart by beating league leaders Finnart in their own back yard with a dramatic late winner.

And now the Paisley side are hoping lightning strikes twice when they take on Kilsyth this Saturday, the team that joined Finnart at the top of the table as a result of their surprise home defeat.

Glenvale raced into a 1-0 lead in the first half thanks to Nicky Donnelly’s clinical header.

And while the hosts responded with just ten minutes left on the clock, there was still time for Kamil Leszczynski to slot home a late winner that saw ‘Vale return to Renfrewshire with all three points.

Manager John Kelly believes the win shows exactly what his side are capable of when they click into gear.

And he’s hoping for a repeat performance this Saturday when his side are on the road again to face new joint-league leaders Kilsyth.

Kelly told Express Sport: “To get a result like that up there is brilliant, and through a last-minute winner is even sweeter.

“Some people will see the timing of the goal and think it was a smash and grab result, but I honestly feel like we matched them for long spells of the game.

“We went 1-0 up early on but we should have had two or three in the first half.

“They equalised with 10 minutes to go and I did think maybe those missed opportunities were going to come back to bite us.

“But the boys stuck to the task and I felt we deserved that late winner.

“To me Finnart are the best side in the league. They’re really well-organised and I think they’ve got a bit more about them than Kilsyth do.

“We’ve got Kilsyth this weekend coming so hopefully we can beat the team on top of the table two weeks running.

“The boys are buzzing for that game now and they’re full of confidence.

“To me it shows that when things click for us, we are a very good side.”

While delighted with his entire team’s performance, Kelly was especially pleased with the four young Under-20’s players who contributed to the fine away victory.

Kelly said: “We’re building from the ground up which is what we’ve always said we’d do this season.

“We had four under-20’s in the squad against Finnart and that shows what we’re trying to do.

“We’ve always said that giving young players a platform is the entire focus of the club as a whole.

“Grant Jamieson made his debut in goals, while Stewart Perry, Ben McDowall and Kerr McKinnon were all involved too.

“At the end of the day no-one is going to catch Finnart or Kilsyth this season. They’re going to battle it out for the title as they’ve been the most consistent teams.

“It’s a nice target to try and beat both of them in the space of a week though and that’s what we’ll try and do.

“It’s all about developing the squad this season and we’re delighted with how it’s going so far.”
