Glentoran vs Linfield: David Healy not dwelling on last season's Big Two misery

Linfield boss David Healy insists last season will count for nothing in tonight’s first Big Two derby of the campaign against Glentoran.

The Blues failed to beat their derby rivals in four league outings last time out but went on to win a third straight title in May.

However, as far as Healy and Linfield – who were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Glenavon on Saturday – are concerned, that’s all in the past.

“It doesn’t concern me that we didn’t beat them last season,” he said.

“I know with the players we have that if we turn up in a better manner and produce a better performance than we did on Saturday, we are capable of beating anyone.

“The message to the players is ‘bring it on’. If you can’t embrace a challenge like this against your biggest rivals, you may as well go and play in a lower league. I played in some decent games in my playing career and I was fortunate to play in some great occasions but the one game I regret not playing in is this one.

“It’s a Belfast derby, the Big Two, or whatever people want to call it and it’s a huge match for both sides. We’re looking forward to it.”

With the Glens licking their wounds after a 3-0 drubbing by Crusaders at The Oval on Saturday, both sides have a point to prove.

A win could also see either club climb as high as second behind early leaders Cliftonville, who are currently six points clear of Coleraine and the Crues at the summit.

“We won’t need any added motivation,” said Healy. “It is a huge game and we’ll approach it as we would any derby against a good side like Glentoran.

“They have made great strides and all credit to everyone at the club. They are after what we want – as are Larne, Coleraine, Crusaders and Cliftonville – and that’s to be successful.”

Glentoran boss Mick McDermott is eager to see a reaction from his players after Saturday’s below-par display against the Crues.

“We were poor from start to finish and we have to regroup,” he said. “In football it’s how you react to setbacks and we have to show up in every game.

“It’s always a good game with Linfield and it’s a chance for us to put things right.”

Linfield are without top scorer Christy Manzinga, who is suspended after being red-carded in Saturday’s draw at Glenavon.
