Glentoran seeking retrospective action after first-half incident in Shield tie at Larne

Glentoran are seeking retrospective disciplinary action on Larne player Mark Randall following an incident during last week’s County Antrim Shield tie between the two clubs at Inver Park.

Video footage showed Glens midfielder Gael Bigirimana falling to the ground after appearing to receive an elbow to the face three minutes into the first round fixture on September 21.

The Burundi international received medical treatment on the pitch, but Randall wasn’t booked after the coming together and went on to play 84 minutes before being replaced by Fuad Sule.

Larne progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition with a 2-1 win courtesy of goals from Kofi Balmer and Davy McDaid, the second assisted by Randall who flighted the ball into McDaid's path.

Glentoran boss Mick McDermott was incensed on the night and the Oval club has now requested that the matter be reviewed by the Irish Football Association's disciplinary committee.

Video evidence of the incident will form a key part of the Belfast club’s appeal which is thought to have been lodged with the IFA in recent days.

Glentoran boss McDermott claimed immediately after last Tuesday night’s game at Inver Park that Bigirimana had “got cracked by an elbow on the face”.

He told reporters: “Go and watch the footage. Don’t take my word for it, go get the TV replays and watch the footage.”

It now remains to be seen how Larne respond and if the IFA’s disciplinary committee deems the incident worthy of further action.

Video footage of the incident has been viewed almost 5,000 times on social media.
