Glentoran make special donation to Royal Maternity Hospital staff

Glentoran Football Club has shown its festive spirit by making a special donation to Royal Maternity Hospital.

Club captain Marcus Kane and his wife Aimee handed over a luxury hamper on Monday night to show the club's appreciation to staff for all their work throughout 2020.

It was also a personal display of thanks from the couple whose new-born son Bowie Harrie Kane is being cared for at the hospital since arriving 11 weeks premature last month.

Marcus and Aimee also helped raise £50,000 for bereavement care at the Royal Maternity Hospital earlier this year with a special charity challenge in memory of their much loved son Harrie who passed away last December.

"The club thought it would be nice to give something back to the ones who have looked after Bowie during his time in hospital, and all the other babies and parents," Marcus said.

"So it was nice for Aimee and I to deliver the hamper.

"Bowie was born on November 19 and he weighed only 2lbs 11oz. He is now 4lbs 1oz and is coming on good.

"He is doing really well and is still in the hospital. He will stay there until at least his due date which was next month.

"So he has a wee bit to go, but he is in the right place if he needs any treatment."

The special hamper was a prize in a raffle held by Internet Glentoran Supporters Club and their friends from the Westbourne GSC, in memory of IGSC member Kevin Milhench who passed away earlier this year.

It helped raise £2530 which will be split between Glentoran's Christmas Appeal and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The draw was won by Patricia Kavanagh, but she asked for the hamper to be donated to someone who would most benefit from it.

So on Monday night Marcus and Aimee collected the hamper and delivered to the staff in the intensive care unit at Royal Maternity Hospital.

"Patricia contacted Ruth (McCreery) in the Superstore and asked for the hamper to go to someone who needed it. Ruth thought it would be nice to donate it to the nurses and doctors at the Royal Maternity Hospital," Marcus added.

"So we brought two big bags of items up to them, and they are going to split them up so everyone in the ICU gets something.

"It is just a small gesture to show the staff how much we appreciate them and all the work they do."
