Glentoran hero Robbie McDaid says Irish Cup win is 'a bit crazy'

Robbie McDaid didn't know how to sum up his feelings after scoring the winner in Friday's Irish Cup final.

The striker pounced in the 115th minute to slot home Ciaran O'Connor's low cross to settle another marathon clash at Windsor Park.

Cathair Friel had cancelled out Paul O'Neill's opener to force extra time.

And as the game ebbed towards penalties, McDaid proved his class with a clinical finish to seal a 2-1 win.

It sees the Glens lift the cup for the first time since 2015, and earn their place in the Europa League qualifiers.

"It is hard to sum up what I am feeling. It is a bit crazy," McDaid said.

"We set out at the start of the year and just wanted to be competitive. To show people we are back.

"But winning this trophy is a massive statement that Glentoran are back."

Glentoran and Ballymena United both came through extra-time and penalties in Monday's semi-finals to book their place in the final.

And they went the distance once again four days later.

McDaid praised both sets of players for coming through the gruelling schedule, four months after last playing a competitive game.

"For any player to play 240 minutes in the space of five days is a credit," he said.

"Ballymena deserve credit, but I think we looked the fitter side.

"Fair play to the lads, they dug in and stayed fit during the break. And it has paid off.

"Mick just told us to settle down. Ballymena ran over the top of us for the first 15 minutes. We didn't get into a groove.

"It was a first final for some of the boys, so we had to be patient and thankfully it came."
