Glentoran boss Mick McDermott reveals defensive pair he wouldn't swap for anyone

Mick McDermott insists he wouldn't swap Conor Pepper and Marcus Kane for any other full-back partnership in the Premiership.

The defensive pair impressed once again on Saturday despite going down to a 1-0 defeat to Linfield in the Big Two derby.

Pepper was plying his trade in the heart of midfield last season but has now reverted back to the position he played during his time across the water with Inverness CT and Greenock Morton.

"I have said it before, and I will say it again, that we have the best two full-backs in the league," McDermott said.

"I will say that publicly to anyone.

"Conor Pepper and Marcus Kane have been massive. I wouldn't swap them for any full-backs in the league. Not a chance.

"Conor has been outstanding, and has been like that since the start of the season.

"He played centre midfield last season, probably by default. He was always a full-back when he played in Scotland.

"He ended up here following a two-year injury, and probably when he arrived here the manager needed a centre midfielder. And he is capable of doing that job.

"But he always was a full-back and he has really grown into it again. He has a great engine.

"And I am so happy to see him do well."

McDermott gleaned the positives from Saturday's defeat to Linfield.

A scrappy game was decided by Kirk Millar's deflected goal in the 87th minute, the winner coming after Robbie McDaid was denied by the crossbar with a looping header.

"You are happy with the performance, effort and commitment of the team," McDermott added.

"Linfield are very efficient at what they do. And we withstood a lot of pressure.

"I thought we managed to deal with a lot of what they threw at us.

"And if Robbie McDaid's header drops in instead of hitting the bar, then it is a different game.

"I think both teams would have settled for a draw near the end, but it is a derby and there are fine margins."

Saturday was Glentoran's second league defeat of the season, but McDermott is confident his players will bounce back against Warrenpoint next Saturday.

"The same preparation will go into that game as we put into any game," the Glens boss said.

"If we put in the same effort and commitment, then we will win a lot of games. We need to make sure we stay on top of things. And if someone doesn't put the effort in, then the bench is the biggest motivator, or sitting up in the stands.

"If you don't put the work in, you don't play."
