Glentoran boss Mick McDermott reveals club's £250,000 Covid hit

Mick McDermott says Glentoran have suffered a £250,000 revenue hit from gate receipts alone since the onset of coronavirus seven months ago.

The Oval boss said the club lost out in the region of a quarter of a million pounds due to games being played behind closed doors or in front of heavily restricted attendances.

The Glens missed out on a big home gate against Big Two rivals Linfield when the first lockdown was enforced back in March.

They also had home fixtures against Larne and Crusaders after the 'split' which were also lost when the season was prematurely ended due to Covid-19.

The financial hit continued into the Irish Cup, with Glentoran losing out on half the gate in the semi-finals and final, with their Europa League qualifier against HB Torshavn played behind closed doors.

The Glens will play their first home game of the Premiership season on Saturday when Glenavon visit the Oval, but under 600 spectators will be in attendance under latest Covid regulations.

"We lost a Big Two game before lockdown in March. We lost the post-split home games. We lost half of the Irish Cup semi-final gate, half of the Irish Cup final gate, and a home game against Torshavn," McDermott told Belfast Live Sport.

"Glentoran is potentially down £200,000-250,000 on what's already past, in gate receipts that didn't come in."

He added: "I think there are massive losses across the top teams, the medium teams, the smaller teams.

"The government has to step in at some point because we are a massive employer."
