Glentoran boss Mick McDermott praised both sets of fans following an emotional afternoon at Loughshore Hotel Arena.
The Glens emerged with a 1-0 win over Carrick Rangers , Navid Nasseri on target in the victory.
But the result paled into insignificance as both clubs remembered Jerry Thompson who passed away last week.
The Carrick Rangers footballer was remembered by both sets of players who wore commemorative t-shrits before kick-off.
A minute's silence was also held, with Thompson's family in attendance.
The two clubs also came together to support Glentoran captain Marcus Kane following the tragic loss of his baby son Harrie earlier in the week.
"Both teams showed their respects by wearing the t-shirts for Jerry and we had a minute's silence, but I thought both sets of fans were outstanding," McDermott told the BBC.
"It shows how much respect they have for the families of both players.
"It was good to see both sets of fans coming together like that.
"It is strange being in a changing room on a day like this. But the players are resilient. When you are dealing with a group of 25 men on a daily basis, there are issues every week they deal with.
"They are resilient and tend to come through it."
McDermott added: "In recent weeks, you have seen the community come toether. The fans, reporters, coaches, players.
"We need to take our hats off to everyone involved."
