Glentoran boss Mick McDermott insists Shay McCartan can handle big-money transfer

Mick McDermott insists Shay McCartan can handle his big-money transfer to Glentoran.

McCartan joined the Glens last week from Ballymena United in a deal reportedly worth £100,000.

It is a significant statement of intent from the East Belfast club who broke the Irish League transfer record to land the twice-capped Northern Ireland international.

"Players are players. And when you play for a club like Glentoran, the expectation to win is there, regardless," McDermott told Belfast Live.

"If you don't sign players, you're expected to win. If you do sign a good player, you're expected to win. But the expectation doesn't change.

"And Shay is a quality professional. He's played in bigger surroundings than this, and transfer fees don't have an impact on players.

"I know there are people reporting in the media about pressure and expectation. There's expectation here every week.

"One of our club legends recently said to me, at Glentoran you're not only as good as your last game, you're as good as your last pass.

"The fans are demanding here, so the expectations are still the same."
