Glentoran boss Mick McDermott confirms Michael O'Connor move

Glentoran boss Mick McDermott has confirmed that former Linfield striker Michael O’Connor will join the East Belfast club in January.

O’Connor, who scored 11 goals in 37 games for the Blues before leaving Windsor Park in 2019, recently parted company with Shelbourne.

The 23-year-old, who has also played for Dundalk, Waterford and Shamrock Rovers, joined Shels in December after a short spell with Ross County.

He scored seven goals in 25 league games as Shels won the League of Ireland First Division title but wasn’t part of new manager Damien Duff’s plans.

Confirming O’Connor’s imminent switch to Glentoran, McDermott said: “We have just signed Michael O’Connor for free, so he will be with us in January.”

Last month, McDermott said he was keen to enlist O’Connor whose brother Ciaran is also at Glentoran but currently sidelined by injury.

He said: “We tried to buy Michael O’Connor before when he was at Linfield. We offered £10,000 for him, but we were turned down. He then left for nothing a few months later.

“He is a good player – and we are always looking for good players. We have multiple targets for the January transfer window.”

O’Connor was at Seaview on Saturday to watch the Mersey Street club’s 1-0 win over Crusaders.

Meanwhile, Linfield are being linked with a move for Glentoran striker Robbie McDaid who is reportedly out of contract at the end of the season.
