Glentoran boss Mick McDermott calls for greater consistency from referees

Glentoran boss Mick McDermott has called for greater consistency from referees in the Danske Bank Premiership.

The Glens had Cameron Stewart sent off in their game against Crusaders on Saturday, which ended in a 1-1 draw at the Oval .

Stewart was shown a straight red card by referee Tim Marshall for an alleged elbow on Howard Beverland in the 88th minute.

McDermott believes referees need to be more consistent in the decisions they make during games.

"The referee didn't give an explanation for the red card. But they never do," McDermott told the BBC.

"I saw it live, and I was far away. But I watched it on our camera which we have here, and I am 99 per cent sure that there was no contact and no intentional elbow.

"Cameron was just shielding himself. Was their contact? I don't know. But the BBC camera will have picked it up, so we are looking forward to that.

"If you look over the course of the game, there were multiple small decisions that people will say, it was only a foul, only a free-kick.

"But they culminate and end up costing teams points. So this can't be allowed to happen.

"We need consistency here.

"We are trying to upgrade the league, in all departments. New stadiums, new players - everything happening around this league.

"And we need to upgrade all departments.

"And the people out there need to be accountable as well. As managers, we want consistency."

Jamie McGonigle had given Crusaders the lead but Robbie McDaid bagged a late equaliser as the game finished all square.

It saw the Glens go nine league games unbeaten, claiming 21 points from 27 on offer.

"I am pleased with the team, the squad and club," McDermott said.

"I am disappointed with the result today, and also the draw last week against Coleraine.

"But it says what we are about as a club when we are disappointed with these results.

"We responded well after going behind. There have been moments this season when we have had to dig in, and the players have done that all season.

"They know and believe they can get a result, even when they go behind. That is pleasing to see."
