Glentoran boosted by Robbie McDaid red card decision

Glentoran have won their appeal against Robbie McDaid's red card against Carrick Rangers.

McDaid was sent off just three minutes after coming on in last Saturday's 3-0 win at Taylors Avenue.

The striker was shown a straight red card by referee Keith Kennedy for alleged violent conduct after challenging Kyle Cherry in the air.

Glentoran lodged an appeal within 48 hours of the game which included video evidence that was viewed by the Irish FA's disciplinary committee who ruled that the red card was a 'clear and obvious error'.

McDaid was facing a three-match suspension which would have ruled him out of games against Coleraine, Linfield and Larne, but now he is free to feature in the busy festive schedule.

He is also available for Friday night's home clash with Glenavon.

Mick MCDermott told the club's YouTube channel: "We submitted the footage on Monday morning, and thankfully the committee got back to us today to say they considered it a clear and obvious error. So they have reversed the three-game suspension and Robbie is available immediately.

"Referees have a hard job and have to make that decision in a split second. Sometimes I think it is necessary for them to wait a few seconds and think about it.

"The referee has to make a quick decision and he made it, and it was judged to be an error by the committee.

"And that's why the appeals process is there."
