A PSNI spokesman added: "The man was travelling in a grey coloured Vauxhall Crossland that was involved in the collision close to the Ponderosa Bar and Restaurant at around 11.45pm.  Two females who were also in the vehicle were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries that are described as serious.

"Police are appealing for anyone who was travelling on the Glenshane Road last night and who witnessed the collision or anyone who has any mobile phone or dashcam footage of the incident to contact local officers in Limavady or the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference 1654 23/04/19. The Glenshane Road remains closed between the Garvagh Road in Dungiven and Tobermore Road in Maghera while police continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision.

It is expected the road will re-open at around 10am later this morning.

Sinn Féin MP Francie Molloy said: "The death of a 46 year-old man in a road collision on the Glenshane Pass last night has saddened the local community. Any death on our roads is one too many.

"I hope that those injured in this collision can make a full recovery. My thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the man who lost his life at this sad time."
