Glenn Whelan to be released by Hearts as Daniel Stendel wields the axe

Hearts will release Glenn Whelan from his contract after just five months, as Daniel Stendel wields the axe at Tynecastle.

The 35-year-old joined the Jambos in August and brought a wealth of experience to Craig Levein 's squad after close to 600 club career games and more than 90 caps for Ireland.

Whelan hasn't impressed new manager Stendel though, and was left out of the squad for the derby with Hibs before the winter break.

Record Sport understands that the veteran is set to have his contract terminated, with an official announcement by Hearts to follow in the coming days.

Stendel has been public in his criticism of the midfielder, questioning his leadership qualities.

He said last month: "He wants to take the responsibility but I have seen only three games. Do you have the feeling he is a leader in this group?

“It's not Glenn's fault - but a real leader in the centre of the pitch? Sorry. Maybe I missed it. Maybe Michael Smith tries to take responsibility on the pitch.

"We can bring one in but also we can improve one other player to take more responsibility. Before I came here, they signed some players who have experience and are the right age to take the responsibility.

“Maybe they are not fit at the moment or they cannot handle the situation at the moment."
