Glenn Whelan leaves Hearts by mutual consent after four months at Tynecastle

Glenn Whelan has left Hearts this morning.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder's contract was terminated by mutual consent.

Veteran Whelan is among a number of players who have had their positions at the club threatened by new Jambo's boss Daniel Stendel, who claimed the 35-year-old lacked leadership qualities.

And it's come to pass that Whelan has left the club, who are struggling at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.

"Glenn Whelan has today left Heart of Midlothian Football Club by mutual agreement," the club said in a statement today.

"The Republic of Ireland midfielder made 17 appearances during his four-month spell in Gorgie.

"The club wishes Glenn well in the future."

The release couldn't have come at a worse time for Mick McCarthy and the Republic of Ireland.

Whelan has been a key part of McCarthy's plans since being handed an international lifeline last year.
