Glenn Whelan given Ireland call as Hearts star aims to match legendary striker

Hearts midfielder Glenn Whelan has the opportunity to surpass Tony Cascarino in the all-time caps list after being selected in Mick McCarthy 's Ireland squad.

The former Stoke City man has been playing for his country since 2008, scoring against Italy and Georgia in that time.

So far the Hearts veteran has racked up 87 caps for his country, and he's been given the opportunity to move up to eighth in the all-time list after being included in Mick McCarthy's squad for the upcoming fixtures.

Whelan can move level with Tony Cascarino on 88 caps if he plays against Georgia, while he'll surpass the former Celtic man if he also features against Switzerland.

That would put him joint eighth in the all-time list, behind Robbie Keane, Shay Given, Kevin Kilbane, Steve Staunton, Damien Duff and Aiden McGeady .

It was expected that Whelan's international career would be over after a friendly against Northern Ireland in 2018, in which he was given the captain's armband for his 85th appearance.

However, the veteran insisted he would never retire from international football and he was given a recall by McCarthy last month, playing the European Championship qualifier against Switzerland.
