Glenn Whelan could join Hearts in time for opening SPL game

Glenn Whelan could join Hearts in time for their opening SPL game of the season at Aberdeen on Sunday.

The Jambos are eager to sign a holding midfielder and Whelan, 35, is a free agent following his release from Aston Villa.

Whelan recently turned down a move to the Cypriot league because he felt it would damage his international prospects under Mick McCarthy.

He was in talks with the Edinburgh side today, a number of reports in Scotland claimed.

Elsewhere, former League of Ireland players Aaron Drinan and Barry Cotter are on trial with Swedish second tier side GAIS.

The Ipswich Town duo are not in Paul Lambert’s plans and stayed behind with the club’s Under-23s when the first-team went to Germany on pre-season.

Drinan is an Irish Under-21 international and was recently on loan at Waterford while Cotter left Limerick for Ipswich 18 months ago.

Sean McLoughlin has completed his six-month loan move to SPL side St Mirren from Hull City.

The centre-back only joined the Tigers from Cork City last week but said: “I’m really excited to get up here

“I’ve still got a lot to learn but I’m looking forward to the challenge. I know the Scottish league is a tough, challenging league.

“There’s some massive teams, some massive games and a huge fanbase up here so it’s definitely a great place to be and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Irish youth international Jake Doyle-Hayes has joined Cheltenham Town on a season long loan from Aston Villa.

Here at home, Finn Harps have midfielder Ruairi Harkin, 29, from Irish league side Cliftonville.

It will be Harkin’s second spell with the Donegal side having made 12 appearances on loan from Derry City in 2009.
