Glenn Roeder, Newcastle's former manager and captain, dies at the age of 65

Former Newcastle United star Glenn Roeder has sadly passed away at the age of 65.

Roeder played for the Magpies during the glory years in the mid-1980s alongside Kevin Keegan before going on to captain the club.

Roeder, a massive influence on Paul Gascoigne as a youngster, then went on to work at United as Academy director and then first-team manager.

Having brought Tim Krul, Andy Carroll, Matty Pattison and David Edgar through the ranks, Roeder was always eager to hand youngsters their big chance.

But he also had the respect of the senior players too and transformed a relegation battle in 2006 into a charge into Europe.

Even in his second season, when he was dismissed as boss at the end of the campaign, he had the team sitting in mid-table after a dozen injuries which included Michael Owen and Nicky Butt.

Newcastle posted a message on social media tonight which read: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player and manager, Glenn Roeder at the age of 65. The thoughts of everybody at Newcastle are with his family and friends. Rest in peace, Glenn."

A statement by LMA Chair Howard Wilkinson read: "A cultured defender as a player, he managed with a studious style and was always generous with his time and ideas.

"Glenn was such an unassuming, kind gentleman who demonstrated lifelong dedication to the game.

"Not one to court headlines, his commitment and application to his work at all levels warrants special mention.

"Football has lost a great servant today and our sincere condolences go to Glenn’s family and friends."
