Glenn Hoffman moving into new role with Padres

Glenn Hoffman has worn a baseball uniform for the each of the past 45 seasons. He has coached third base for 22 of those, the past 15 with the Padres.

For the first time since he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox as a 17-year-old, Hoffman will not be on the field during the regular season in 2021.

Hoffman is retiring as a coach and will move to a new position within the organization.

"It was awesome we got to the playoffs," the 62-year-old Hoffman said. "That was a motivating factor. I was so blessed to be out there as long as I was on the field with those guys. Think about it — when I first came here in '06 we went to the playoffs, and to end with the playoffs, it just feels right."

The expectation is Bobby Dickerson, who last year completed his first season as Padres bench coach and infield coach, will replace Hoffman at third base, but that move has not been finalized. Dickerson was the Baltimore Orioles' third base coach from 2013-18.

Hoffman said Thursday he has accepted a position as senior adviser to baseball operations. Much like his younger brother, Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman, Glenn Hoffman will work with players at spring training and spend time around the Padres and their minor-league teams during the season.

"I'm really excited about what I'm going to do and the new challenges," he said. " ... This is awesome. I'm so thankful I'm going to be able to stay in the organization. I'm tickled to death with it. Who knows? I might be able to help a little bit, help somebody in the organization get to the big leagues or someone in the big leagues to get better."

Hoffman played nine seasons in the majors for the Red Sox, Dodgers and Angels. He served as Dodgers' interim manager for the final 88 games of the 1998 season, during which time they went 47-41, and was that team's third base coach for the next seven season. He joined the Padres after the 2005 season and coached under managers Bruce Bochy, Bud Black, Andy Green and Jayce Tingler.

"Talk about what Ting did, it's incredible," Hoffman said. "First-year manager, then going through a pandemic. ... I feel this club is in good hands."
