Glenn Hoddle tips Jose Mourinho to repeat Tottenham trick for Europa League round of 32 tie

Tottenham Hotspur have landed a dream tie in the Europa League round of 32.

That is the view of former manager Glenn Hoddle who has delivered his verdict on Spurs being paired with Austrian outfit Wolfsberger AC when the competition resumes in February.

It will be the second time in which the Lilywhites have faced Austrian opposition in the Europa League this season having taken four points from six in the group stage against LASK.

Considering the likes of Benfica and Real Sociedad were potential opponents, Hoddle is of the opinion that Spurs fans and Jose Mourinho will be very happy with the draw.

Crystal Palace 1 -1 Tottenham Hotspur: Jose Mourinho post-match press conference

"Imagine every Spurs fan and Jose out there thinking we couldn’t have picked that – no disrespect to them – they’ll go there and win that," Hoddle said. "I think it’s key, he could go into this tie playing what I’d call the second team at the moment and maybe this second team may be good enough to go deep into the tournament.

"When you’ve got other players up your sleeve like Son, you can bring on Kane, there is a given day where he will say ‘no, I want to win this trophy’.

"We all know how much he loves winning trophies – he will start playing the A team when he wants to.

"But I think for this tie it’s a blessing in some ways that he can play this team that we saw in the last game against Antwerp.

"He can play that team and protect the Premier League side.

"It’s all about – are they still going to be near the top of the league, are they going to be doing well in the cup football when FA Cup starts?

"It all looks rosy at the moment but they’ve got a lot of hard work to do, but it’s a good tie for them."

The Spurs starting XI against Royal Antwerp on matchday six saw Mourinho make as many as nine changes to the team that begun the 2-0 North London Derby win over Arsenal four days prior.

Among those drafted in were the likes of Gareth Bale, Ben Davies, Lucas Moura, and goalscorer Carlos Vinicius.

If Spurs are still in Premier League title contention as well as the latter stages of the FA Cup come February, Mourinho could be tempted to repeat this trick for the first-leg in the knowledge his side are at home for the return leg a week later.
