Glenn Hoddle outlines how Kai Havertz can impress Frank Lampard after slow Chelsea start

Glenn Hoddle believes Kai Havertz has a point to prove this evening as Chelsea take on Sevilla in the Champions League.

Havertz hasn't yet managed to replicate the form he showed in Germany since his £72million move to Stamford Bridge from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.

Though, the midfielder has shown glimpses with four goals and two assists to-date, and he has the chance to add to that this evening in Spain with Chelsea taking on Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan with the chance to claim top spot in their group with a win.

The German will be desperate to impress boss Frank Lampard having been left out of the starting lineup for the derby with Spurs in the Premier League last weekend, coming off the bench late on.

And former Chelsea midfielder turned pundit Hoddle also needs impressing, currently underwhelmed by Havertz' performances.

Speaking on BT Sport about the much-changed Blues side Lampard selected for the clash with Sevilla, Hoddle said: "I think he wants to learn more about some of his players.

"For me, Havertz, his Chelsea career hasn’t started. We saw a lot of him in Germany, he was different class but you wouldn’t say that at this moment in time."

Havertz has started seven Premier League games to-date, racking up 12 appearances across all competitions in all, and he did miss three games due to self-isolation after contracting coronavirus.

Havertz spoke about his mindset since joining Chelsea in a recent interview with SportsBild. Asked about his sizable fee and the pressure it brings, he said: "I can't do anything about the size of my transfer fee. That is how the market works, and I don't concern myself too much about it.

"I try to play well. I don't think about how much I cost when I go out onto the pitch."

The German star got off to a flier in Spain as a driving run from midfield and a perfectly weighted pass for Oliver Giroud was converted by the Frenchman to put the visitors 1-0 up after just eight minutes.
