Glenn Hoddle offers advice to Vincent Kompany after Man City legend's nightmare start at Anderlecht

Glenn Hoddle has offered his views on life as a player-manager, following the news that Vincent Kompany has changed his matchday role at Anderlecht.

The Belgian club announced this week that the former Manchester City captain, who left the club to return to his old club in the summer, has decided to relinquish the management side of his role during games.

The Belgian Pro League outfit have bagged just two points out of a possible 15 after losing to the Belgian champions, their worst start in 21 years.

As a result, Kompany took the step of making himself captain of Anderlecht and relinquishing tactical and responsibilities to head coach Simon Davies during games.

Hoddle, who spent a period as a player-manager with Swindon and Chelsea, believes Kompany has made the right decision and opened up on the difficulties of performing in two important roles.

Speaking to BT Sports Early Kick-Off, he said: "It's very difficult. I think it was harder back in the day, you know. Really, we had the training to do, we had one assistant, no fitness coaches.

"I'd have to look at videos, I'd have to scout, train, keep myself fit and play. As a player-manager, you have to be able to affect the game, you have to be good enough to get in that starting team. If not, there's going to be problems.

"If you can affect the game in a positive way, then that's your first port of call, you can't take someone's place for the sake of it. I went to Chelsea and for the first two years, that was tougher. Obviously, a bigger profile and you start getting a few knocks.

"I think for Vincent (Kompany), because it hasn't started to well, maybe he's doing the right thing. Something has to change so I think he's handing over the management on a matchday."
