Glenn Hoddle admits that Chelsea's defending has to improve, if they are to progress in the Champions League.
The Blues drew 2-2 in an end-to-end game at the Mestalla Stadium, having led in the second half of the game after Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic had helped Frank Lampard's men turn things around after Carlos Soler's opener for the La Liga side.
However, Valencia substitute Daniel Wass rescued a point for the Spanish side, who also missed a penalty and saw several good chances go begging to leave the fate of both sides in the balance ahead of the final group game.
And Hoddle said that the tally of 18 chances for Valencia is something that Lampard and his side must rectify, having been too open at times in the game.
Speaking as a pundit on BT Sport, the former Chelsea boss said: “Well the easiest one Valencia could have scored was in the first half was [Maxi] Gomez . He must have just taken his eye off the ball.
“There were too many spaces, with balls in behind. I think the approach has got to change, certainly at different times in the game.
“Early in the game, you don’t want to give anything away, and then in the last few minutes, you have got Cesar Azpilicueta , who is playing right sided centre-back in a five, and is overlapping and not getting the ball, and them getting an unbelievable chance at the back to win the game, that’s got to stop.
“I don’t care what you say about entertainment, a better side, a more clinical side, would have punished them and would have beaten Chelsea without a doubt.
“And don’t forget if those goals go in, that’s when you are behind the eight ball, if you go two goals down you have then got to chase it a bit more and that’s when you get picked off.
“I thought Chelsea might have done better, in the first half they might have picked them off a bit more, and they could have been a bit shrewder and maybe got a third goal, because it was always on a knife edge and there wasn’t enough secure defending.”
