Glenn Hoddle identifies the lesson Ajax vs Tottenham taught him after near-death experience

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle has spoken about the impact that Spurs' remarkable Champions League comeback against Ajax had on him.

The former England captain suffered a heart attack in October 2018, collapsing after punditry duty for BT Sport, and was left in a critical condition.

The 62-year-old recovered and returned to his punditry duties, which put him in attendance for Spurs' remarkable win against Ajax in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

In the videos of Hoddle celebrating Lucas Moura's hat-trick goal, the joy is clear to see on the Spurs icon's face and was an emotional moment for many.

The significance of the evening has not been lost on Hoddle, who admitted he never felt he would have a moment like that in football again.

“It hit me in the studio, I sat down and taking it all in, I thought I might have missed this, I nearly missed it, and I took it all in because that was my extra time,” he told BBC Radio 5Live.

“After what happened to me, I nearly lost my life, after that I thought that football is important to me, of course it is, but I nearly went and it showed football wasn’t that more important. I never thought I’d get excited too much about it.

“But a year later, I was experiencing that, jumping up, Rio Ferdinand jumping all over me, and that’s what football does. I was sitting in hospital thinking that I was happy to be here, what I’ve done in football doesn’t mean a thing to me really compared to your life.

“I thought I’d never, ever get a feeling like I did. It was quick a shock to me after all the dust settled down, I never thought I’d get an adrenaline rush like that from football again.”
