Glenn Hoddle delivers ominous transfer verdict on Harry Kane and Jack Grealish to Man City links

Glenn Hoddle says Harry Kane and Jack Grealish will be the final pieces of the jigsaw that Pep Guardiola needs to dominate in Europe with Manchester City.

Guardiola has enjoyed great success domestically during his time in England, but a Champions League triumph is missing from the trophy cabinet at the Etihad Stadium, having lost 1-0 against Premier League rivals Chelsea in the final of the competition last month.

City did win the Premier League title at a canter, finishing 12 points ahead of their city rivals Manchester United.

But bringing in two of England's brightest stars should be enough to deliver a first European crown, says Hoddle, with City having been strongly linked with both Tottenham's Kane and Aston Villa captain Grealish.

"I heard that Manchester City were going to go for [Jack] Grealish and [Harry] Kane a few weeks ago," the 63-year-old former Spurs and England boss told Betfair.

"City haven't won what they want to win, which is the Champions League, but that's why they're doing what they need to do.

"Rather than buying four or five players, Pep [Guardiola] thinks they're not far off it. They need a finisher, and Grealish in the next few years is going to be getting better and better. It's the right time to buy him.

"They've got the money to do it and I'm not surprised. They will take City to the next level if they get them."

Reports have suggested that City will have to part with at least £100m if they want to sign Grealish, with the midfielder only having signed a new five-year contract at Villa Park in September 2020.

This, says Hoddle, was all part of the plan for Grealish, who by signing the deal last season was ensuring his boyhood club would get a sizeable fee should he leave this summer.

"If it happens, it'll probably work out at £15m a year at that fee," added Hoddle.

"Things will have been going on behind the scenes for quite some time. Jack signed a five-year contract to make sure Villa would get a significant fee."

Any deal for either Grealish or Kane will have to wait until after EURO 2020 though, with Gareth Southgate needing every inch of focus from the duo for the remainder of England's time in the tournament.

"These two lads will be focused on the excitement of trying to win the Euros," said Hoddle.

"Once they get onto the pitch everything else disappears, so they'll be 100% focused."
