Glenn Hoddle defends Jose Mourinho and Tottenham over style of play criticism

Glenn Hoddle believes criticism of Tottenham's style of play is nonsense, instead labelling it 'winning football'.

Jose Mourinho's brand of football, which Spurs have wholly bought into, has once again gathered plenty of criticism with questions over whether fans will enjoy watching Tottenham.

But with Spurs top of the league and finishing top of their Europa League group on Thursday evening, any negative comments about the style should be ignored, according to former player turned pundit Hoddle.

"They are playing winning football at the moment," he said on BT Sport after Tottenham's 2-0 win over Royal Antwerp in the Europa League.

"Their mentality has changed this season and against the top teams, they will do what Jose wants.

"They have exciting players on the break. It has been a bit easier without fans.

"The question for fans is 'what if we go one-nil down?' But it's winning football. They have so much power going forward that they can take any team on the break."

Hoddle went on to question why Spurs' counter-attacking style is being looked at so differently to that of Leicester City's when they won the title.

He added: "There will be games where they dictate. They are good enough but Jose knows at the moment that the best way of beating the top teams, that's how they will play.

"But they have exciting players at the top end of the pitch. No one said this about Leicester. They won the league on the counter-attack and no one said 'this was horrible football'."

Asked whether Spurs actually can win the league, Hoddle said: "They are saying Spurs can win the league. That hasn't been said for years!

"It's a stretch. It's a grand national, a long race, but it feels like there is an open window there. Don't count Chelsea or Tottenham out but I would still say Liverpool and Man City are my favourites."
