Glenn Hoddle casts doubt over Raheem Sterling's Euro 2020 player of the tournament credentials

England are in their first major tournament final in 55 years when they take on Italy in the closing match of Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Gareth Southgate’s men will have the chance to win only the nation’s second major competition if they come out on top over Italy. It won’t be an easy task, with Roberto Mancini's side undefeated in almost three years.

The former Manchester City manager took the reins of his home country in May 2018 and has only lost two games since.

The Three Lions will have to be at their best if they want to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy for the first time and the performances of Harry Kane, Jordan Pickford and Raheem Sterling will be crucial to that success.

Sterling has been one of England’s standout performers this summer, scoring three goals and having a huge hand in plenty of others

The 26 year old has attracted plenty of praise from fans and ex-England stars and is currently the favourite to be named player of the tournament

But while former England manager Glenn Hoddle admits Sterling has had a huge impact on Southgate’s team, he stopped short of saying that accolade belongs to the City forward just yet.

Speaking to Betfair, Hoddle said: “I don't think there is an outstanding player yet. Sterling is up there but it all depends on what happens in the final.

“In every tournament there's normally a player, Ronaldo or Mbappe, at the moment there's been some outstanding performances from a lot of players.”

The 63 year old went on to discuss some other contenders for the award, including Italy’s Lorenzo Insigne and England’s Kane.

He said: “Insigne has been great and the goal he scored was wonderful and whether he's done enough to be player of the tournament depends on who wins on Sunday whether someone like Insigne, Sterling or [Harry] Kane wins it.”

“If Harry Kane scores a couple of goals and England win, that could be what turns it to who is the most impressive player of the whole tournament. It's still up for grabs.”
