Glenn Close has revealed the truth about the circumstances that led her to twerk to EU’s “Da Butt” in an iconic Oscars moment.
The actor was quizzed about the song during a game at the 93rd Academy Awards on Sunday (25 April), led by Lil Rel Howery.
Participants had to guess whether a specific song, played by musical director and DJ Questlove, had won an Oscar, had been nominated for one, or hadn’t done either.
After correctly stating that “Da Butt” wasn’t nominated for an Academy Award despite being included in Spike Lee’s 1988 film School Daze, Close was asked whether she knew the accompanying dance routine. In response, she got up from her chair and twerked, much to viewers’ amazement.
Close later explained how the moment unfolded in an Instagram post, sharing a photo of herself wit her “wonderful table mates” Daniel Kaluuya, Darrell Britt-Gibson, and screenwriter and film director Chris Terrio, whom she brought with her to the ceremony.
According to the actor, part of the moment had been researched ahead of time, but the dancing was not rehearsed.
“I knew that Lil Rel was going to quiz me about Da Butt and all three guys helped me run through what I was to say,” she wrote.
“... I had googled ‘Da Butt’ and watched Spike's music video so when Lil Rel asked if I could do the dance... you can actually see me think of the video. That part was completely spontaneous.”
She said Kaluuya, Britt-Gibson, and Terrio “egged [her] on”, adding affectionately: “It was ALL their fault.”
Close also congratulated Kaluuya for his win in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah.
“You are completely brilliant,” she wrote, addressing Kaluuya. “I now consider both Daniel and Darrell to be friends-for-life!”
