Glenn Close has revealed that she refused to cry while playing the US Vice President in the 1997 political thriller Air Force One.
The movie starred Close as the calm, stoic VP Kathryn Bennett alongside Harrison Ford’s President James Marshall, whose plane is hijacked.
Looking back on the film during a career retrospective for Vanity Fair, Glenn said: “One thing I remember was they had a scene around that table where she broke down crying.
"And I said, ‘I will not do that. I don’t think that would happen. Not my vice president. My vice president would step up to the challenge.’”
Close’s remarks come in the wake of American voters choosing Kamala Harris to be the first ever female Vice President of the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor can currently be seen in Hillbilly Elegy on Netflix. The film has had negative reviews, forcing Close to defend its director Ron Howard.
“The film wasn’t made with politics in mind, it was made with Ron’s intent,” she said. “I think he succeeded magnificently to tell the story of a very specific family.”
