Glenkens community cupboards proving popular to help locals through lockdown

If Old Mother Hubbard lived in the Glenkens she certainly would not find the cupboard bare.

A community cupboard in New Galloway has proved extremely popular during lockdown, providing essential supplies for locals.

And it has been so successful that one has been introduced in nearby Balmaclellan.

New Galloway Community Enterprises introduced the first cupboard in the royal burgh last month thanks to the efforts of community engagement worker Sam Rushton and volunteers.

Treasurer Helon Keron said: “It’s something a bit different.

“It’s not like a foodbank as if you run out of something you can take it from the cupboard but if you can’t replace it that’s fine as well.

“There are also children’s craft supplies and books and games.

“It’s been very popular with people and the community has supported it.

“It’s there to provide help to people that need it in the weeks and months to come and we’re also signposting people to foodbanks to use as well, with the details all on the cupboard.”

Funding for the cupboard came from the Princes Countryside Fund and a donation from the Barscobe family, with Wilkos in Castle Douglas donating products to go inside.

There was enough funding left over to allow a similar cupboard to be launched in Balmaclellan.

The cupboards are open to anyone and people are encouraged only to take what they need and, if possible, replace it at a later date.
