Glengormley dad and daughter raise funds for local food banks with homemade Christmas cards

A dad and daughter from Glengormley have been raising funds for local food banks by designing Christmas cards together.

Local artist Stephen McCurdy has been creating the bespoke cards alongside his five-year old daughter Olivia.

Inspired by the vital services provided by Trussell Trust food banks in Newtownabbey and North Belfast, Stephen set out to create a Christmas card featuring a festive Belfast City silhouette showcasing various famous landmarks.

He was soon joined by the artistic talents of his daughter, Olivia, who copied her dad's design on her own tablet before adding her favourite part - the aurora borealis along the sky.

The cards even feature Santa's sleigh being pulled by a DeLorean.

The pair fundraised for local food banks in the same way last year, receiving £1,000. This year, however, they have surpassed that target by raising a total of £1,440.

Speaking about the project, Stephen said he's happy to be able to help families who may be struggling amid pandemic pressures and price rises.

He said: “The past two years have been financially difficult for a lot of families with the pandemic and after supporting last year, it's evident that more help was needed this year due to food price rises and shortages.

“I got 1,500 cards printed with just over 1,300 sold, and a few generous donations along the way. The support from the local community has been amazing. £10 will give a parent peace of mind that their family will not go hungry tonight.”

Stephen, who is originally from the Cliftonville Road area of North Belfast, sold the cards through his Facebook and Instagram pages along with the help of Carol Marshall at group set up to support local artists, Our Wee Makers.

The dad and daughter team sold just over 1,300 cards, and received many generous donations along the way.

They raised a total of £1,440, with £720 going to the North Belfast food bank and the same amount going to the Newtownabbey food bank.
