Glencoe tops ski resort snow charts

For British skiers and snowboarders, the hunt for epic snow conditions has traditionally involved a long journey to a foreign mountain. But now to the list of classic resorts such as Whistler, Vail, and Chamonix, they can add Glencoe.

The centre which, like its fellow Scottish resorts, is better known for its lack of white stuff, has just experienced the heaviest snowfalls of any winter sports area monitored by the Ski Club of Great Britain .

Its owner Andy Meldrum said that the ski club reported that 80cm (31.5in) of snow fell up to yesterday morning. "We had 36 hours of very heavy snow, so at least two metres must have fallen at the top.

"Historically, Scottish resorts have sometimes struggled for snow, but the past three or four years have been exceptionally good with snow lasting well into the spring."

Al Morgan, information manager at the ski club, confirmed Glencoe had received the most snow of the 250 resorts it monitored. "We can't say it received the most snow in the world, because we don't report on all of the resorts."

He said all the Scottish resorts had heavy snow over the last two days, extending what has been one of the best seasons for decades. "Cairgorm got 65cm yesterday and the Nevis range had drifts as high as five feet (150cm) up on the mountain," he said.
