Glencairn rename stadium in touching tribute to lifelong supporter

Rutherglen Glencairn have renamed their stadium in honour of a lifelong supporter whose quiet kindness touched so many at the club over the years.

Their home ground will now be known as the Hamish B Allan Stadium, paying tribute to their former committee member who passed away in July last year at the age of 89.

New signage will be in place for the start of the 2020/21 season in October.

Glens committee man, Peter Ferguson, paid tribute to Hamish and said the honour is a fitting reward for a man whose generous gestures down the years did not go unnoticed.

Peter told Lanarkshire Live Sport: “Hamish was a fan all his life. He was treasurer of the old Glencairn Social Club on Glasgow Road and he was on the football committee at the same time.

“When he took over the role, the social club was in serious debt, but a year later it was in profit, so he turned things round quite dramatically.

”Over the years he contributed money to the club just very quietly, and on many occasions.

Committee man Peter Ferguson said Hamish would quietly fund things like championship flags or nights out for players (Rutherglen Reformer)

“For instance, when the players were going on a night out he would quietly slip them a sum of money for them to enjoy their night and things like that; lots of nice wee things without any fuss.

“The Championship flags we’ve won, he always bought them and the pole for it as well.

“He didn’t do it with any bells and whistles, he just did things quietly.

“We were all aware of what he was doing, but not many others were.”

“He deserves this for what he’s done for the club.”

Hamish’s affinity with his local club was such that, just before he passed away in hospital, the Glens ensured he got his hands on the West Region Championship trophy when the club won the title in the 2018/19 season.

The Glens have revealed Hamish’s widow Elizabeth helped facilitate the memorial and Peter added: “Elizabeth is continuing with her membership and she’s continuing to back us, so we are grateful for that.

“She was absolutely delighted when we told her about our plans and she’s really pleased with the tribute. There will be signage going up and in time for the start of the new season.”
